We’ve all done it. Skipped a workout. Slept through the alarm. Blown it off. As we head towards the new year, it’s time to fix that. Your body and mind will thank you. Here are our 5 tips on how to stick to a workout routine.
1. Write It Down.
You’ve heard it a million times. You write things into existence. Write down your workout in your calendar, planner, on a post-it on your palm, wherever you need to. Just write it. And don’t just tap it into your phone somewhere.
TIP: Put the phone down and LITERALLY write-it with a pen (or a pencil if you can find one anymore). You have to physically write-it or the magic doesn’t work.
2. Use the Buddy System.
A buddy will hold you accountable. Your excuses will sound less plausible to another human being and therefore not work (your Corgi didn’t eat your workout headphones, yoga pants, and tank top, and water bottle- just your favorite headband.)
Plus, research shows actual health benefits to working out with a friend or in a group vs. solo.
So buddy up!
3. Treat Yo Self.
This one is pretty straight-forward.
Offer yourself a reward for that workout. You’ll be more motivated to get started if you reward yourself with a scoop of ice cream, a yummy post-workout meal (or shake- I know somewhere you can get the best-tasting protein powder by the way 😏), a massage, some netflix… whatever gets you going!
Speaking of getting going…
4. Pre Workout is Your Friend.
Okay you knew this was coming somewhere on this list.
The cool part about pre workout supplements is that they really do mentally help kick-start the motivation to exercise.
Not many people fully understand the science behind pre workouts, and think that all they really do is load you up with caffeine, but there really are more sophisticated mechanisms at play.
(Check out one of our most popular posts to find out exactly how pre workout drinks work for a full education on your favorite gym-time pick-me-up!)
If you’ve ever tried our ATHENA Unleashed pre workout, you know it’s essentially impossible to NOT go workout after a scoop (or two for the brave.)
Pre workout also ritualizes the workout preparation process. Once you’ve had your pre workout, you know it’s time to get a move on.
5. Just Start.
They say ‘action follows motivation’. You could stand on the edge of that proverbial workout pool all day thinking of reasons not to jump.
Remember- you’re only one workout away from a good mood, and better health.
Now stop reading this blog and jump. 😉
